There was no question. I had to pay the price. I wondered if I would end up with Charlie, wherever she was.

“There have to be consequences. Those are the rules,” he said. I was having a hard time reading him. “Since this is your first time, I can put you on probation.”

Probation? I’d never heard of anyone getting a reprieve.

“Contrary to what you might believe, we do not set you up for failure, my dear Laura,” Danny said. “We understand mistakes will be made. Then we give you a chance to learn from them and not repeat them.”

“So I’m not off the case?” I looked out the window and saw the swans gliding through the lake. I would have missed all this. I will learn from my mistakes, I told myself.

“No. Well, you will be cut off temporarily. In that time, you’re not to have contact with Rebecca or Teresa. You’re to spend that time reviewing The Code and the lessons on detached compassion. This will also give you the opportunity to regain your energetic integrity and clear your connections to the physical realm. Then, you will have a fresh start.”

“How long? What if something happens and they need me?”

“Check with me in a couple of days. I’ll monitor your progress and let you know if you’re ready to return. I’ll have Latoya keep an eye on your clients in the meantime. Not to worry.”

I hated to desert Rebecca now when she was so upset, but then I remembered it was what she wanted.

“Danny, I don’t know if I’ll be able to work with Rebecca anymore, anyway. She told me she never wanted to see me again.”

He shook his head. “Teenagers.” He sounded exasperated. “Do you really think she meant that?”

I did. Maybe it was because I could literally feel her anger.

“She was having a moment. This, too, shall pass, my dear.” Danny stood. “Use this time wisely, Laura. Those girls need you.” He left me there.

I had to get outside. The Rock Garden was calling me. I went out the back door to avoid running in to anyone. I wanted to be alone and think. I felt myself growing calmer as I got closer to the Rock Garden. Today the boulders were standing upright, like soldiers at attention. I felt them welcoming me.
